Finally – it’s that wonderful spring-y time of year when the evening are getting lighter, the winter blues are fading and all the possibilities of the new year are sparkling on the horizon. I’m waxing lyrical a bit here – because I am wont to do that from time to time – but I really am happy to see a bright spring day after all those weeks of post-Christmas winter gloom. It means it’s time to get out into the garden!
I’ve learnt through trial and error that NOW is the time to get busy outdoors if you want a colourful garden this summer (last summer I left it too late), so you need to start choosing your plants now.
I love cottage-garden style flowers like delphiniums, foxgloves, hollyhocks and roses. I’m not very good at growing them admittedly, but that rarely stops me trying. I’m trying to create a bee-friendly garden (as we all should be!) and luckily the bees like all the sort of plants that I do so it’s a win-win situation.
May I suggest, if you want to buy one thing for your garden this summer, you make it a bee-friendly cottage garden plant. You won’t regret it. You can grow them in tubs and on urban balconies too, they’re good for bees, and they are good for you too! Gardening is like therapy, it actually is. And it’s nowhere near as expensive.
These beautiful Delphiniums are currently on sale at the RHS online shop – stock up!
